Other Time Expressions with Prepositions and Adverbs

There are other common prepositions and adverbs of time. These are explained in the table below.

Word Use Example
Ago To talk about a specific point in the past. I went to France two weeks ago.
Since To talk about duration from a point in the past until now when we mention a date. I’ve been studying English since 1996.
For To talk about duration from a point in the past until now when we mention a period of time. I’ve been studying English for fourteen years.
After Later than a specific point in time. I’ll come after lunch.
Before Earlier than a specific point in time. I’ll come before lunch.
By Before a specific point in the future. I’ll be there by 12 o’clock.
Until No later than a specific point in time. I’ll be here until 5 o’clock then I’m going home.
From __until/to __ Between two points in time. The shop is open from 9 until/to 5.
