The Future Simple – Will

The Future Simple

I will go

Will + Bare infinitive

Many students think will is the most common verb used to talk about the future. In fact, will is only used in very specific circumstances. These are:

  1. To talk about promises. For example: I’ll always love you.
  2. To talk about threats. For example: If you’re late again, I’ll fire you.
  3. To make offers. For example: I’ll help you.
  4. To show refusal. For example: The car won’t start. She won’t listen.
  5. To make predictions based on intuition or experience. For example: He’ll be late. He always is.
  6. To talk about spontaneous decisions: For example:  A: Do you have plans for this evening? B: No, I guess I’ll go the cinema.

Futures without will

We do not use the future after the following words: as soon as, until, before, after, when, while, unless.

I will tell him when he gets home. NOT I will tell him when he will get home.

I will tell him as soon as he calls. NOT I will tell him as soon as he will call.

We are referring to the future but we use the present tense.
