The Past Perfect Simple

The Past Perfect Simple

I had (not) gone

Had (not) + Past Participle

We use the past simple to talk about an action in the past.

For example: I went out.

If we want to talk about an action that happens before another action in the past, we use the past perfect.

For example: I had called her before I went out.

We also use the past perfect rather than the past perfect continuous with verbs that cannot be used in the continuous.

For example: Verbs connected with: thought processes (know), desires (like), senses (smell)
