The Present Perfect Simple vs. The Present Perfect Continuous

Both tenses show that there is a link between the past and the present.

We usually use the Present Perfect Simple to put a focus on completion or result.

We usually use the Present Perfect Continuous to put a focus on the action in progress and continuity.

Compare:

Present Perfect Simple Present Perfect Continuous
I’ve written a report. I’ve been writing a report.
The report is finished. The fact the report is completed is important. Maybe the report is finished. Maybe not. It’s not important. It is the activity that is important.
