The Zero Articles

Sometimes there is no article before a noun. When we don’t need an article, we call this the zero article.

We use the zero article with:

1. Abstract concepts. Beauty is subjective. NOT The beauty is subjective.

2. Names of cities, towns, or states: Seoul NOT The Seoul.

3. Names of streets: Green street NOT The Green Street.

4. Names of lakes and bays: Loch Ness NOT The Loch Ness.

5. Names of individual mountains: Mount Everest NOT The Mount Everest

6. Names of languages and nationalities: Chinese, English, Spanish.

7. Names of sports: Volleyball not The Volleyball.

8. Names of academic subjects: Mathematics NOT The mathematics.

9. Countries in general. China NOT The China.

10. Names of continents Asia NOT The Asia.

11. Names of Individual islands: Barbados NOT The Barbados.
