Some verbs can be used with a gerund or an infinitive with the same meaning.
For example: I hate to get up early. I hate getting up early.

Some verbs can be followed by a gerund or an infinitive but the meaning is different.
Word | With the gerund | With the infinitive |
Forget |
I forgot meeting him. (I met him in the past but now I don’t remember) |
I forgot to meet him. (I had an arrangement to meet him but I forgot and didn’t meet him) |
Remember |
I remember meeting him. (I met him in the past and now I remember) |
I remembered to meet him. (I had an arrangement to meet him. I remembered and I met him) |
Regret |
I regret going out last night. (I went out and now I regret it) |
I regret to inform you that your application was unsuccessful. (Formal use. Meaning: I’m sorry) |
Stop |
I stopped smoking. (I gave up/stopped permanently) |
I stopped to smoke. (I was walking down the street and I stopped in order to smoke) |
Try |
I tried bungee jumping for the first time last year. (Try something new) |
I tried to learn French but it was difficult so I gave up. (Try and fail). |
